DRIGGS – Driggs will go down in history Friday night as the Spud will host the first digital picture at a drive-in theater. About 15 percent of theaters across the nation have switched to a digital format, but The Spud says they’re the first drive-in to do so. Out with the old, and in with the new, and in this case, the very old. The previous projector dates back to pre-World War II and hasn’t been upgraded until now. “How exciting it is? It’s just unbelievable. If you’ve ever watched a blue-ray player at your home or on a plasma or high definition television? You now get to see that on this 34 foot high 76 foot wide screen, it’s just absolutely amazing,” said Keith Zednik, who operates The Spud Theater. Toy Story came on five film reels, Iron Man came on eight. Life’s easier at The Spud because now all they have to do is plug and play with a hard drive. “When you look back in 20 years, when you start Googling ‘Who is the first drive-in? (to go digital)’ People are going to go, ‘Oh it’s The Spud in Driggs, Idaho,” said Zednik. The Spud says it’s confirmed with the United Drive-in Association as well as other national drive-in theater groups, that they’re the first drive-in theater in the nation to go digital. Next month, they’ll even be 3D capable, but are currently waiting on that upgrade. “The amount of upgrades we’re doing are just a night and day difference,” said Zednik.
